The Bay vs. The Bag

Plastic bags cause serious problems for the health of our coast and bay shorelines.
San Francisco Bay, the largest estuary on the West Coast, is particularly vulnerable to plastic litter and debris. Thirty percent of California’s land and thousands of miles of creeks and rivers drain to the Bay. It is estimated that more than one million plastic bags end up in the Bay watershed every year, threatening the ecosystem.

Save The Bay is the Bay Area's leading organization is working exclusively to protect, restore and celebrate San Francisco Bay and its watershed. The Bay Area's quality of life and economy depend on a healthy and vibrant Bay. Read more about their Bay vs. Bag campaign.

Want to see the difference Earth Hour has made?

http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/03/earth_hour_2009.html

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness. Earth Hour is a message of hope and a message of action. More than 1,000 cities in over 80 countries observed Earth Hour 2009 on Saturday March 28th, as homes, office towers and landmarks turned off their lights for an hour starting at 8.30 pm local time to raise awareness about climate change and the threat from rising greenhouse gas emissions.

The Boston Big Picture website has an excellent collection of a series of before-and-after photographs - which will fade between "on" and "off" when clicked.

Retreating Glacier

Saw this today...scary!

In 2006, James Balog and National Geographic, attempted to photograph the effects of global warming as they unfolded. The result is the "Extreme Ice Survey."

26 solar-powered cameras capture time-lapse images of glaciers in Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, the Alps, and the Rocky Mountains. Over the next two years the project will take more than 300,000 pictures. You can view these spectacular images by clicking here.

Came across on Al Gore's website.
